Destination NSW Regional Event Fund — Grants for Events That Drive Visitor Economy
GRANT SPOTLIGHT: DESTINATION NSW REGIONAL EVENT FUND
Destination NSW Regional Event Fund — Grants for Events That Drive Visitor Economy
Events businesses, tourism operators, regional councils, and community organisations running events in regional NSW have access to a dedicated funding stream through Destination NSW. The Regional Event Fund runs multiple streams with different purposes and timing. Here's how to navigate it.
What the Regional Event Fund covers
The Regional Event Fund is administered by Destination NSW and supports events that drive overnight visitation to regional NSW. It operates across several streams, each designed for a different stage in an event's life. The Flagship Event stream supports emerging events building their profile and visitor numbers. The Incubator Event stream provides seed funding for events in their first or second year. The Event Development stream provides one-off grants of up to $50,000 for events that have already received maximum Flagship Event funding and have a comprehensive growth strategy.
The Event Development stream is currently open until 31 December 2026, or until funds are exhausted. Funding under this stream is intended for key strategic growth initiatives with a direct, measurable impact on increasing overnight visitor numbers.
Who benefits from the fund
Event organisers in regional NSW — whether community-based, commercial, or institutional — running events with genuine visitor economy potential. The fund isn't for local-attendance-only events; it's specifically designed for events that bring visitors to the region, fill accommodation, and support local hospitality, retail, and services.
Destination NSW also runs the NSW Regional Business Event Development Fund, which targets business events specifically — conferences, trade shows, and events that bring professional delegates to regional NSW. That's a separate program worth investigating for conference and events businesses.
What assessors look for
A clear and credible rationale for why the funded activity will increase overnight visitation. Not visitor numbers in general — overnight visitors specifically, because those are the ones who spend on accommodation, meals, and local experiences across multiple days.
Evidence that the event is already delivering. Flagship and Event Development stream applicants need to show track record — historical attendance, visitor origin data, accommodation bookings, and year-on-year growth. The fund backs events with demonstrated momentum, not just potential.
A realistic budget for the specific activities being funded, with a clear line of sight from the spend to the visitor outcome. Marketing campaigns, transport support for out-of-region visitors, and event-specific infrastructure that expands capacity are the kinds of activities that tend to score well.
Founder tips
Read the specific stream guidelines before assuming your event fits. The Flagship, Incubator, and Event Development streams have different eligibility criteria, timing, and funding amounts. Applying under the wrong stream is a common reason otherwise strong applications don't progress.
Visitor data is non-negotiable. If you don't already have a mechanism for tracking visitor origin — even something as simple as a postcode survey at ticketing or entry — start now. Future applications will be much stronger with two or three years of that data behind them.
The Event Development stream requires applications before the funded activity begins. Retrospective claims for events that have already run aren't eligible. Build the grant into the event planning cycle, not as an afterthought.
Where KP Retail fits in
Tourism and events businesses are sometimes surprised to find that their event has a grants angle. Destination NSW's programs are structured differently from most business grants — the framing is around visitor economy outcomes rather than business innovation or sustainability — and that requires a different kind of application.
KP Retail has experience working with event operators and tourism businesses on grants that connect their activity to measurable visitor economy outcomes. If you're running an event that genuinely moves the needle on regional tourism and you want to understand what funding options exist, that's a conversation we're glad to have.
The Regional Event Fund is a genuinely useful program for events with real visitor economy impact. If you're running or developing an event in regional NSW and want to understand how the Destination NSW funding landscape maps onto your situation, talk to KP Retail.
