We sit down with the very talented Bec from Velvet Canyon to learn what it takes to build a global accessory brand.

What inspired you to launch Velvet Canyon?

My sister and I have always wanted to start a brand together! We had a lot of ideas but just kept going back to sunglasses. I styled a lot of shoots and always had difficulty finding the exact glasses I want, so why not design the ones I want? 

What is your most popular product or service, what really makes your customers & clients get excited?

Our most popular product, by far, would have to be the Zou Bisou sunnies. They are loved by everyone! Such a classic shape.

What are your top 5 apps for optimising how you run your business?

Wait, we should have 5? Maybe I need to read everyone else's answers... Planoly for scheduling Instagram posts is my fav.

Do you have a dream stockist for the brand?

What has been your highlight for the brand since launching?

Last year we went to France to shoot our short film, La Femme. There were 12 of us in the South of France, in an old villa. It was incredible.

What advice do you have for other business owners looking to launch their business?

Be prepared to make mistakes, be prepared for things to go wrong! Make sure you LOVE what you are doing. It’s your baby, if you don’t love it, no one else will.

What has been your biggest learning so far?

Well, we'd never designed sunglasses before we launched VC, so that was fun to learn - the process. Also just running a business and every aspect of that. We're still working it all out to be honest.

Apart from grant funding, what other gold nuggets should businesses take advantage of? (Networking, groups, guest speaking, PR etc)

PR has been amazing for us. We have a great agency in the US who has expanded our business a lot. Getting a sales agency was also one of the best decisions we made. Del Rainbow has been a huge part of our business over the last year.

What exciting things can we look forward to for the brand in 2020?

More international campaigns and some fun new styles!
